It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

The Color of Air by Gail Tsukiyama

Read an excerpt from The Color of Air by Gail Tsukiyama.

I’m still reading an advance copy of The Color of Air by Gail Tsukiyama, and wrote more about it last week.

The cover, title, and promotion of When No One Is Watching by romance author Alyssa Cole seems designed to appeal to fans of domestic suspense like The Woman in the Window by A. J. Finn, but the storyline of racial tension among neighbors in an “emerging” Brooklyn neighborhood, and the themes of social injustice and class warfare are far more complex and subtle than the twisty plot surprises of The Woman in the Window et al.

In When No One Is Watching, Alyssa Cole has written a literary thriller centered around uneasy race relations when a mostly Black neighborhood is “gentrified” and residents are priced out of their own homes. A Brooklyn novel as different from the “usual” Brooklyn novel as the tour the main character develops of her neighborhood is from the historical neighborhood tour offered to white visitors to the city.

When No One Is Watching will be published by William Morrow Paperbacks on September 1, 2020.

Listen to an excerpt from The Two Lives of Lydia Bird.

I’m pretty close to the end of The Two Lives of Lydia Bird by Josie Silver, but I’m not sure what I think about the book yet. The audio narration by Olivia Vinall is excellent and there are many moving (and humorous) passages in this story of a young woman (Lydia) grieving the loss of her fiance and finding solace in an unusual fashion, but I think I need to see how the author wraps things up before I can buy into the premise of an actual alternate life.

Let me know what you’re reading this week! Thank you for visiting!

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? (#IMWAYR) is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date. It’s a place to meet up and share what you have been, are, and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organize yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever-growing TBR pile! This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at Book Date.
