It’s Monday again and we’re a whole week into 2024 already! I’ve been whipping through audiobooks this week, trying to catch up on household chores while I listen, but my print books are going at a glacial pace.

Night of the Living Rez by Morgan Talty
My choice for 2024 First Book of the Year was Night of the Living Rez: Stories by Morgan Talty.
It’s an excellent collection of linked short stories about a family that lives in a Native community in Maine. Like a lot of literary fiction, the stories might seem depressing, as the characters are struggling in realistic ways with poverty, addiction, and difficult circumstances they were born into and certainly don’t deserve to be trapped under for their whole lives.
Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young
Spells for Forgetting was an off-list Christmas gift. I didn’t have much time for reading in December, so I’ve just barely started it, but it has magical realism and buried secrets from the past so far!

How to Dance by Jason B. Dutton
How to Dance by Jason B. Dutton was a LibraryThing Early Reviewer win for me in December. I really enjoyed this romance! The main character, Nick, has a disability — cerebral palsy — and would perhaps not want me to call him inspirational in how he overcomes it with sheer force of personality and charisma.
How to Dance won’t be out until February, so full review will follow!

I keep meaning to pick up Spells for Forgetting. I’ve heard good things about it. Hope you love all your reads!
Seems like you’ve had a great start to the year!
wishing you a wonderful reading week
I keep seeing Richard Osman books everywhere, he is definitely very popular.
You’ve got to try them! They are much more about the characters and friendships than the mystery!
happy new year. I am reading a crime novel by Garry Disher – Day’s End and a non-fiction titled Brisbane Bookshops!
Happy New Year, Laurie! Sounds like a good start to the reading year. I’ve heard great things about Night of the Living Rez and would like to read it. I don’t normally read romance, but I LOVE that How to Dance features a romantic lead with a disability! And I must finally get to the Richard Osman series – I’ve heard SO many rave reviews!

Book By Book
I have the 4th Richard Osman on my TBR shelf and am really looking forward to reading it! Glad to hear you loved it.
This latest Thursday Murder Club book might have been my favorite so far! Sadly, in the acknowledgments the author said he’s writing something else next, so we’ll have to wait a while for the next installment. I’m sure his new series will be good, too, though!
It was my favorite, too!
