It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

Recently Purchased

Memorial Day today in the U.S., feeling very different than usual! It’s a Monday holiday in remembrance of deceased members of the armed forces and also the unofficial (early) start of summer. I’ve got a summer book lined up to start soon.

Best Behavior by Wendy Francis
(Graydon, 2020)

I read and enjoyed Summer Sail by Wendy Francis, and Best Behavior has all the hallmarks of family drama, snarky observation, and everybody failing to behave well but eventually forgiving each other to make for a great poolside read — especially if I had a pool.

Anyway, I expect it’s going to be a great backyard or porch read for our early heat wave this week!

“What could go wrong when you put a blended family up against the perils of a college graduation weekend and mix in twin graduates, divorced parents, opinionated grandparents and a young stepmom out of her depths? Enough to populate a delightful, smartly paced read in which plenty goes right too. Francis writes with grace, depth and humor about complex family dynamics and the joy and heartache of watching young adults spread their wings and fly from the nest.”
—MEG MITCHELL MOORE, author of The Islanders

I also purchased Two Thousand Years a fantasy novel by a local author, M. Dalto, who will be speaking at our library’s upcoming virtual local-author event. She’ll be talking about the sequel, which came out recently, so I need to catch up and read the first one ASAP.

Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones
(Macmillan Audio, 2011)
Narrated by Lorelei King

Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones is a paranormal romance/urban fantasy. I love the narrator, Lorelei King, and the main character Charley Davidson’s badass/softie attitude!

This is a light read to follow the more serious audiobooks I just listened to last week: Long Bright River by Liz Moore and The Gifted School by Bruce Holsinger.

Read the opening of Second Grave on the Left.

Still in the fantasy vein, but darker than the Charley Davidson series, The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith is my current book. If you liked The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins, you will probably like this.

It’s been a while since I entered a blog giveaway, but I did enter one on Twitter last month, and I won by random drawing a book of my choice from Justine of Whispers & Wonder! Thank you, Justine! Justine blogs about science fiction and fantasy – especially dark fantasy. Check out her most recent reviews and follow @WhispersandWonder on Instagram and @__its_justine__ on Twitter.

“It’s like The Good Place meets Law & Order: Bibliophile Crime Unit. Highly recommended. This book is so much fun, and you should be reading it. Trust me. Stories about story are some of my favorite kinds. This book definitely makes the list. I am so glad I read this.” — Seanan McGuire, author of In an Absent Dream

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? (#IMWAYR) is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date. It’s a place to meet up and share what you have been, are, and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organize yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever-growing TBR pile! This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at Book Date.
