I only just finished The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith (pseudonym of J.K. Rowling) this morning with less than 24 hours to spare before the 32-hour audiobook loan expired, so that was a relief. Otherwise, not much change in my current reading since last Monday!

The Last Samurai by Helen DeWitt
“This bizarre, bold, brilliant book, originally published in 2000, is original both in content and form. As a toddler, Ludo interrupts Sibylla’s thoughts mid-sentence with complaints that are written in capital letters; it looks ugly on the page but vividly conveys the mother’s experience. Conversation reflects rhythms of speech rather than formally correct grammar and punctuation, and the narrative moves in and out of digressions, contemplating, for instance, John Stuart Mill’s education. Perhaps the book is a little bloated, but DeWitt’s zeal cannot fail to enchant.”

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
“Tamsyn Muir’s absorbing storytelling and Moira Quirk’s immersive performance create a richly imagined fantasy world…Quirk is at turns antagonistic, vulnerable, and hopelessly helpful as she characterizes all the participants and stewards of Canaan House…Winner of the AudioFile Eaprhones Award.” —AudioFile
It’s been a few months since I had this audiobook from the library but the voice of the narrator (meaning both the audiobook narrator and the first-person narrator of the story) brought it all right back to mind. I’m waiting for Harrow the Ninth, second in the Locked Tomb fantasy series.
I just signed up for the TBR Pile Challenge to read ten books in 2023 that have been on my to-be-read list for over a year* but am thinking I also need a TBL Pile Challenge, because Project Hail Mary just came in for me from the library, too, and I’ve been planning to listen to that for over a year.

The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith
I like long books! No complaints about the length of The Ink Black Heart here! It’s number 6 in the Cormoran Strike series, though, and you definitely don’t want to start here, if you haven’t read the other books. (I haven’t seen the TV show, and probably never will.)
* I know what you’re thinking. A year on the TBR list is nothing! I could have easily come up with ten books that I’ve been meaning to read for over ten years. 😉

The Ink Black Heart looks interesting. I hope you enjoy reading this week!
My It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? post.
Oh The Last Samurai. I read an essay or something recently where the author was raving about the book and made me want to read it. Who knows when I will get to it, but I hope you are enjoying it!
A long audio book for sure. Great you got it listened to before it returned to the library.
I am now very curious about The Last Samurai!
Good selection. Thanks for sharing your updates. Here’s my latest: http://www.lyndonperrywriter.com/2023/01/review-of-feast-of-fools-anthology.html
