Had a quiet weekend at home, with no excuses not to write a Weekend Cooking post for Saturday, a Sunday Salon for Sunday, or at least prepare this It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? post to have it ready on Monday morning. But, still, here I am – running late on Monday!

The Story of the Lost Child by Elena Ferrante
Over halfway through this 400+-page final book in the Neapolitan Novels quartet. I read some every morning after I get up, instead of writing blog posts or a novel.
The Fragile Threads of Power by V. E. Schwab
The Fragile Threads of Power by V.E. Schwab is a NetGalley review copy I didn’t finish before the book was published last week. (Given that it’s over 650 pages long, not so surprising!) May be the start of a new trilogy (?) set in the world of the fantasy trilogy starting with A Darker Shade of Magic.
Love it, except for the cover! Much prefer the earlier design, but then I may be old-fashioned.

The Islanders by Meg Mitchell Moore
Squeezed in one last summer book in September! Unfortunately, The Islanders wasn’t a favorite for me compared to other books by Meg Mitchell Moore that I’ve read.
If you like Elin Hilderbrand’s Nantucket novels, though, you should love this one set on Block Island in the neighboring New England state of Rhode Island (which, BTW, if you’re from a different country, may make it sound like the whole state is an island like Hawaii, but Rhode Island is not like Hawaii.)

A Footnote to Plato by Tina Lee Forsee
I received a review copy of A Footnote to Plato by Tina Lee Forsee from the author through LibraryThing Early Reviewers program. I just saw that the audiobook (read by the author) is only $1.99 on Spotify right now, so if you like campus novels, academic politics, or philosophical fiction, go ahead and grab it! The author does a great job reading the audio, and I’m enjoying it.
Manhunt by Gretchen Felker-Martin
Um, yes. Those are what you might think they are on the cover of Manhunt by Gretchen Felker-Martin. This is one of those horror novels you don’t want to be eating a snack while reading or listening to!
Otherwise, set in New England and grotesquely funny, this post-apocalyptic, tension-filled story is a perfect choice for me for the RIP Challenge.
Temporarily Not Listening To
The Living Blood by Tananarive Due
This sequel to My Soul to Keep, from best-selling author and two-time Bram Stoker Award finalist Tananarive Due, is a breathtaking supernatural thriller. After the disappearance of her immortal husband David, Jessica Jacobs-Wolde must come to terms with the healing blood David gave to her and their daughter Fana. – Publisher
Started my October RIP (“Readers in Peril”) challenge audiobooks early this year, but The Living Blood by Tananarive Due was a lot longer than I realized when I downloaded it from the library – over 25 hours – so I ran out of time and had to let the next person borrow it.

Witch King by Martha Wells
WITCH KING is Martha Wells’s first new fantasy in over a decade, drawing together her signature ability to create characters we adore and identify with, alongside breathtaking action and adventure, and the wit and charm we’ve come to expect from one of the leading writers of her generation. – Publisher
Witch King is a complicated fantasy story with intriguing characters, and the audio narration is great, but the story required closer attention than I was giving it. Reading in print, I would have flipped back and forth a lot to keep track of the timeline, which is hard to do while listening to an audiobook in the car. I love the Murderbot books on audio, but Witch King didn’t work for me and I gave it back to the library without finishing it.

Nice looking assortment of books. I know what you mean about following timelines in audiobooks. While I enjoy audiobooks, sometimes I have to switch to a print version especially if it is fantasy. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
I love the Murderbot books but I’ve had a little trouble with her fantasy novels as well. I liked her Emilie and the Hollow World though, so I guess it’s just a matter of some of her books work for me and some don’t.
I would love to read more of the Elena Ferrante books. I’d love to watch the series, too.
Oh my! The reading gets pretty scary (for little ol’ chicken me) during October.
You can always add your link to Sunday Salon, even if it is Monday, btw.
Oh gosh, I haven’t read any of these! I hope you have a great week.
Sounds like you are enjoying the RIP challenge! Lots of dark, spooky things here. And a book set on Block Island! I’ll have to check that out for my mom. She and her husband have a sailboat in Stonington, CT, and go to Block a lot. They’ve taken our sons many times, so it’s a favorite place for them now, too (and my husband and I have been a few times, too).
Enjoy your reading this week!
