I had been considering The House of Broken Angels as a readalike for The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride, which everyone who reads it seems to love.
In the end, I decided that The House of Broken Angels (which also has mixed families who cut across race and class “lines”) is bawdier and slangier and, while great in its own right, might not necessarily be a good match.

I wrote about this haunted house story in last week’s “It’s Monday” post. It has a twisty plot and a little bit of unreliable-narrator thing going for it, so if you’re looking for a somewhat scary combination of psychological suspense and ghost story, The Vanishing would be a good one for you. Unlike my current audiobook! (Horror Story by Paul Tremblay)

Busy here, too! Looks like a great week of books, Laurie! I read The Devil’s Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea, a nonfiction book, but I haven’t read any of his novels (that one was stunning, by the way). The Vanishing sounds great – I like a good ghost story! And I read Breakfast with Buddha way back in 2009 and enjoyed it – is this one a sequel to it?
