Song of Solomon (Vintage, 2004) by Toni Morrison
Song of Solomon (Knopf, 1977) by Toni Morrison won the National Critics Book Award for Fiction in 1977, and I’m only now getting around to reading it in 2022. Shame on me! I’ve only read The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison; Beloved is next on my list.
I’ve had an old trade paperback copy in the house for years, marked up by a student. Not sure if I picked it up used somewhere or if it belonged to one of my children. I hope not the latter, because the notes in the margin and the yellow highlighting don’t go much beyond the first 50 pages!
Live a Little (Hogarth, 2019) by Howard Jacobson
From the Man Booker Prize-winning author of The Finkler Question and J, and one of “our funniest writers alive” (Allison Pearson): a wickedly observed novel of old age and new love. – From the Publisher
First You Write a Sentence (Penguin, 2019) by Joe Moran
“Do you want to write clearer, livelier prose? This witty primer will help.” —The New York Times Book Review

Tales from the Folly (Tantor, 2020) by Ben Aaronovitch
Short stories from the Rivers of London universe, with introductions of each by the author. Love this series!
Animal Farm (Blackstone, 2005) by George Orwell
The Blackstone Audio edition of Animal Farm by George Orwell (originally published in 1945) is narrated to perfection by Ralph Cosham. Only three hours long, and highly recommended!

I am embarrassed to admit this, but I have yet to read any Morrison! Maybe I’ll make a dent in her library this year? We’ll see!
Have a great week!
Interesting assortment of books. Have a great week. https://cindysbookcorner.blogspot.com/2022/02/its-monday-what-are-you-reading-6-22.html
i have tried to read a couple of Ben Aaronovitch’s books but … I just can’t do it 🙂 Makes no sense; too utterly weird for me.
First You Write a Sentence has attracted my attention in your line up.
I have3n’t read any of Morrison’s work altho I have a couple on my TBR shelf. Beloved is on my list to read. Will check out the writing book – looks interesting. Happy reading!
I had to read Sula in college and it was so–harsh? rough? depressing?–it kind of broke me for Morrison. I do have The Bluest Eye on my Classics Club list though. I enjoy classics more now that I’m older and she seems like an author whom I should give another chance. Now I just need to get over my hesitancy and pick it up!
Enjoy your week!
Novels describing social ills and social injustice can be so difficult and upsetting to read! The Song of Solomon was assigned AP English reading for my daughter in high school, she told me, but it’s a tough read at any age, as far as the subject matter, so best to tackle it when you’re in the frame of mind for it and not in need of comfort reading or something light-hearted!
