Mid-July Already????
I’m still relying on audiobooks for most of my reading, as I was in June, and am still having my OverDrive audiobooks expire before I can finish them. I had to go back on the wait list for Normal People by Sally Rooney (narrated by Aoife McMahon), as well as (just this past weekend) The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai (narrated by Michael Crouch), Becoming by Michelle Obama, and The Last Romantics by Tara Conklin (narrated by Cassandra Campbell) — all of which have looonnnng waitlists.
What I was able to finish last week:
Lethal White by Robert Galbraith (narrated by Robert Glenister)
I’m now all caught up on the Cormoran Strike books, which is both good and bad. Good because I was waiting for this one for a while; bad because there isn’t a next one yet. A friend at work wants me to watch the TV show, but I don’t want to. Should I try it? (We probably don’t even subscribe to the channel it’s on, anyway!)
I think Lethal White is my favorite of the Cormoran Strike audiobooks so far. The narration is great and the author’s storytelling style is well suited to the audiobook format. (Everyone knows Robert Galbraith is J.K. Rowling, right?)
My current audiobook is one that expired on me previously: Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides (narrated by Kristoffer Tabori). I’ve been waiting so long for it to come around to me again that I started it over from the beginning, but since it’s 19 hours long and I found I did remember the parts I had already listened to, I’m skipping forward now trying to find where I left off at before.
This is another book that is fantastic on audio, because the story spans three generations and the author just unspools it in a seamless first-person narrative while going back and forth in time and place between the town of Smyrna in Greece and the American city of Detroit, Michigan.
For Book Club
In print books, I’m reading Summer Hours at the Robbers Library and really need to get going on it to finish by Wednesday. Am enjoying it so far, but left it longer than I meant to before starting it.
From the Nightstand
It’s Monday, and I had jury duty last week, which was stressful. Please tell me what you are reading that’s fun and relaxing — or isn’t, but is something I might want to put on my TBR for a future time!
It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? (#IMWAYR) is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date. It’s a place to meet up and share what you have been, are, and about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organize yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment, and er… add to that ever-growing TBR pile! This meme started with J Kaye’s Blog and then was taken up by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at Book Date.
The Cormoran Strike programmes were fairly enjoyable – rather far fetched but then so many serials are….. I can’t evaluate them against the books since I haven’t read any of them.
I haven’t read the Cormoran Strike books but have a couple on my Kindle to get to when I can. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
I am currently reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I recently finished Broken Harbor by Tana French. I have liked everything that I have read by Tana French but this was one was difficult to read, extremely tense.
I liked the TV adaption of Cormoran Strike, I think it’s definitely worth a look to see if you enjoy it.
Have a great reading week
Summer Hours at the Robber’s Library sounds good. My week in review
Sorry you’ve had to let so many great audiobooks go because of time. I hate that!
A really relaxing book for me this summer has been Evvie Drake Starts Over. It was just the right mix of fun and smart and it was terrific on audio.
Hello there! I’m so glad I found your delightful blog! I added/have added several of your reads to my want to read list and have subscribed to your blog! I love your selections – especially your books about books/bookshops! Thank you for sharing!
