Count the Ways by Joyce Maynard is a family novel that spans several decades – following the main character Eleanor from her college years and early marriage through till her children are adults and getting married themselves. It’s a poignant novel, so heavy with sadness and regret that it might have been depressing. But, instead, the characters seemed so real I felt as though – given the individuals involved and their circumstances – Eleanor and her family, her friends and lovers, are all just managing to do the best they can with the lives they have. The perspective the author write from is Eleanor’s, and it feels as though Eleanor is telling the story of her life as truthfully as she can.
