Top Ten Tuesday
This post started out as today’s suggested Top Ten Tuesday topic – Books That Make Me Laugh Out Loud – but my spotty tags (on LibraryThing and my blog posts) didn’t give me good enough stats to go by. So rather than trying to name specific books, I’m listing my top ten favorite authors who reliably make me laugh out loud – usually with their dialogue, but I’m including a couple of nonfiction authors, too. These are just the first ten who came to mind; I’m sure I could come up with others!
I’ve listed them in alphabetical order by last name. Links go to the authors’ Web sites, if you’d like to know more about their books.
M.C. Beaton (particularly the Agatha Raisin books)
Jasmine Guillory
Kevin Hearne
Gill Hornby (no author Web site)
A.J. Jacobs
Ann Leary
Elinor Lipman
Lisa Lutz (particularly The Spellman books)
G. M. Malliet
David Sedaris
I’m sharing this with Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. If you’re looking for books that will make you laugh, check out the other Top Ten book lists there!
I’ll keep an eye out for all of these authors!

I had forgotten how funny parts of The Wedding Date were.
I couldn’t think of any recent lol reads for me, so I didn’t participate this week, but yes to David Sedaris! The most funny by him for me is Holyday on Ice. These are really hilarious Christmas short stories. I actually listened to them, narrated by him. I was really laughing so so much.
And obviously Me Talk Pretty One Day, but I’m French, so that’s to be expected, lol
Yes, Holidays on Ice might be my favorite, too! Thanks for stopping by even though you didn’t participate this week!
Yes, that was my first Jasmine Guillory book!
I also love A. J. Jacobs as well as Elinor Lipman and M. C. Beaton. I’ve relied on humorous books so much in the past year to keep me going.
I’ve seen Kevin Hearne on a few lists. I love it when an author can make me laugh, especially if it’s in a mystery.
Great idea to feature all the author websites.
Agatha Raisin is surprisingly popular here in Switzerland. I see those books everywhere! I guess the humor translates well. And I’ve really enjoyed Elinor Lipman and Lisa Lutz, but most of the others are new to me. I’ll have to check them out.
What a good idea to list authors! I love Kevin Hearne. And Jasmine Guillory is high on my TBR list. 😀
What a great list! And I haven’t heard of or read books by most of these. I’ve read AJ Jacobs, David Sedaris, and I just read The Spellman Files by Lisa Lutz for the first time – lots of laughs!
Let’s see … I would include Janet Evanovich (her Stephanie Plum series is hilarious) and Stephen McCauley who has a very clever and funny wit – I always find myself marking great lines in his novels.
Fun topic and a great list!

Book By Book
I’ve only read One for the Money by Janet Evanovich (on audio) and I do remember laughing out loud. But I only included authors who I have read more than one book by. I’ll have to look for something by Stephen McCauley!
