“First Book of the Year” is a book bloggers’ event hosted annually by Sheila of Book Journey. Check out Sheila’s First Book of the Year post at https://bookjourney.net/2024/12/18/12th-annual-first-book-of-the-year/ to fill your TBR with a list of great books for 2025 reading.
My first book of 2025 is going to be Shrines of Gaiety by Kate Atkinson, which I bought on a trip to London last year and have been saving for the right time. (Kate Atkinson also has a new Jackson Brodie book just out, but I usually listen to those on audio, so I didn’t choose that.)
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The award-winning author of Life after Life transports us to a restless London in the wake of the Great War—a city bursting with money, glamour, and corruption—in this spellbinding tale of seduction and betrayal.
A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: WASHINGTON POST, TIME, THE GUARDIAN, BOOKLIST
This is the 12th annual First Book of the Year collage by Sheila! I completely missed 2019, as 2018 was apparently a bad blogging year for me, but I have joined in the fun for ten years, going back to 2015.

I won’t make any specific reading resolutions this year, because I don’t usually keep them, but I do hope to keep up with book blogging a little more this year, and maybe get back to reviewing books again.
We’ll see! I made this same promise in 2021
With so much to worry about in the country and the world, best wishes to us all for at least a good reading year in 2025!
I have only read one Kate Atkinson and quite liked it. It will be interesting to see what you think of this one.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts about this book. I’ve read and enjoyed Atkinson in the past, but it has been quite some time since I’ve read one of her books.
