It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? Long Weekend Edition 05-30-22

It’s Memorial Day weekend, and the unofficial start of summer! Our three adult kids gave me and my husband the gift of a family vacation last year for our sixtieth birthdays. Where to go? When? How? It was fun to daydream about a big trip together from the three separate states the kids live in!

But with COVID; two weddings and two honeymoons; a big job change; and everyone’s normally busy schedule, we decided to stay on the East Coast and go over the holiday weekend to reduce travel time and save everybody one vacation day. The kids found a beautiful Airbnb in Lewes, Delaware, not far from Lewes Beach where we took them for day trips a few times when they were so young they don’t really remember, back when we lived in Wilmington. It’s the first-floor unit in a converted church, with lots of good reading spots, including a deck.

Cape May by Chip Cheek

Cape May (Celadon, 2019) by Chip Cheek

Cape May is a raw, provocative portrayal of a young 1950s couple on the cusp of a sexual awakening, and the temptations that upturn their honeymoon and reshape their marriage. – from the Publisher

I looked into whether we could take the famous Cape May-Lewes Ferry across the Delaware Bay to Cape May, New Jersey while we were here in Lewes, but we didn’t have enough time.

We did see the ferry making its final run while we were on our own sunset cruise last night!

I may wait till the last minute to pack, but I plan my vacation reading well in advance!

It All Comes Down to This by Therese Anne Fowler

It All Comes Down to This (St. Martin’s, 2022) by Therese Anne Fowler

It All Comes Down to This by Therese Anne Fowler is coming out on June 7th. It would have been a good one to read last weekend, when we were invited to a friend’s place in Maine, because a summer home on Mt. Desert Island plays a large role in the book.

My review is overdue; I need to get it written today. Later! Now, it’s time to pack up and leave this beautiful vacation rental.

On an audiobook break at the moment!

I did finally get to finish The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. I had less than 30 minutes left when my library download expired a few months ago. Loved it and have had the second book on hold for a while already. Long waits for these!

The Princess Bride by William Goldman

We listened to The Princess Bride by William Goldman, read by Rob Reiner, on our way to New York to pick up our daughter. This was a disappointment, because I didn’t realize it was an abridged version, although I was surprised that it was only four hours long and I should have realized it. But it served its purpose because it kept us both awake for our late-night, four-hour drive.

Believe it or not, I’ve never actually read The Princess Bride, although I finally broke down and watched the movie first a few years ago.

Please let me know your thoughts in the comments, if you are so inclined.

What an awesome gift! That looks like a neat place to vacation.

I’ve never read The Princess bride either.

There”s a joke about The Princess Bride being abridged from a fictional longer work by Morgenstern… I used to teach that book. Maybe I should write about it sometime soon!
