Tremor by Teju Cole

Random House, 10/17/23

“A masterful novel by one of America’s finest writers . . . Cole is not just offering us a novel about art, migration, or marginalisation, rather a new politics of seeing, reading and thinking.”—The Daily Telegraph

Nobody’s Fool by Richard Russo

From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Empire Falls, this slyly funny, moving novel about a blue-collar town in upstate New York—and about Sully, one of its unluckiest citizens, who has been doing the wrong thing triumphantly for fifty years—is a classic American story. – from the Publisher

How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix

Penguin, 2023

New York Times bestselling author Grady Hendrix takes on the haunted house in a thrilling new novel that explores the way your past—and your family—can haunt you like nothing else. – from the Publisher

How to Sell a Haunted House is full of creepy dolls and even creepier puppets, as well as the everyday scary stuff that human beings have to deal with – death, real estate, and estranged family. It’s my favorite kind of horror, because even though the story is scary and really pretty horrible, the dark humor makes it bearable, the characters are realistic, and the plot has surprising twists.

I read it in print, but I’ve heard that it’s great on audio, too. I have a couple of Grady Hendrix books I still need to catch up on, but I need to take a break from horror after this month, for the sake of my anxiety levels and blood pressure. 😉

Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree

A fun fantasy novel – first in a series! Read by the author, who is a professional audiobook narrator himself. An ode to coffee and friendship among all kinds of beings, humans and otherwise.

Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

Another five-star road trip audiobook that my husband and I both liked! If you liked Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell or Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr, pick this one up soon. Don’t let the science fiction title and cover design turn you off!

The October Country by Ray Bradbury

More RIP Challenge reading that I didn’t even get to start before October was over. I’ve read this classic story collection before, but classics are always worth reading again!

Wow, great reading update, Laurie! I keep hearing about Tremor – sounds like a good one. And thanks for the reminder – I have NEVER read anything by Richard Russo and really want to, so after reading your post, I added him to my Christmas wish list. So glad you and your husband enjoyed Sea of Tranquility! Did you read Glass Hotel? Some of the same characters carried over, though it wasn’t technically a sequel. I just love Emily St. John Mandel. And I also love Ray Bradbury! That one doesn’t look familiar, but I read every Bradbury book in the public library in high school, so I’m sure I read it years ago – I am slowly rereading his books.

Hope you have another great reading week – enjoy your books!

How To Sell A Haunted House looks like an interesting one, but I really don’t care for horror of any kind. Bet my daughter would like it though. Happy Reading!

All look like good reading. I have heard many readers laud The Sea of Tranquillity. I think I am more of a light weight reader though!

I’m reading Fablehaven – a Junior fantasy and A Pressure Cooker saved my life by Juanita Phillips.
