“First Book of the Year” is a book bloggers’ event hosted annually by Sheila of Book Journey. Check out today’s First Book of the Year post at bookjourney.net/2026/01/01/first-book-of-the-year-2026 to see the photo collages and get ideas for 2026 reading! Here’s the photo I sent in:

“A novel in the spirit of Meg Wolitzer, Jean Hanff Korelitz, and the great Nora Ephron . . . Who says comedy is dead? It’s all here—incredible characters, joyful satire, a wisecracking newswoman, family secrets with a twist of lime.”— Allegra Goodman, bestselling author of Sam
Like Mother, Like Mother by Susan Rieger, which I put on my Christmas wish list as a last-minute whim after browsing Barnes & Noble online, after seeing that it was blurbed by two of my favorite authors, Allegra Goodman and Laurie Frankel, is going to be my official first book of the year. I ended up receiving two copies at Christmas, so I took that as a sign from the universe.
Actually, today, I’m still trying to finish reading two ebooks I downloaded from the library that are going to expire this evening shortly after 8. I’m also doing this post on my iPad sick in bed, which is slowing me down. My immune system made it through Thanksgiving and Christmas, but gave up the ghost just before New Year’s, so I couldn’t read at all yesterday, (although I did finish an audiobook).
In good news, we had our son and DIL and two granddaughters visiting us over Christmas, which was a lot of fun! AND our very first grandson was born (a few weeks early) on Christmas Day, which was the best surprise!

This is the 13th annual First Book of the Year collage by Sheila! Apparently, I missed 2019 — I guess 2018 was a bad blogging year — but I have participated for 11 years now, going back to 2015!
